When looking to replace my 3 ¾ TC Daiwa Infinities I found that I was going round in circles, and let’s face it spending a lot of time in tackle shops and on the internet reading reviews and checking out the latest prices and possible discounts. I had decided to move from 3 ¾ TC rods to a more forgiving 3 ¼ TC,
the reason being, although I like to be able to launch my large lead to the horizon, I also need to be able to play large carp under the rod tip, knowing that my Infinities where on the stiff side I would always compensate with my clutch and not quite give the fish as much pressure as really needed, all this worked well, however when your spending £100 + on a rod, should you really have to make these compensations in the first place. I set out to find a rod that would give me everything I needed without me having to give in to any quirks that the chosen rod might have. Yes I looked at the more expensive end of the market, Harrison obviously came into mind, I had previously owned some Chimera rods and got on quite well with them, however the soft tip was not great for casting large leads or PVA bags. I came across SONIK by chance really on the net, and became interested when respected anglers raved about the rods. I read up on the rods and was totally impressed the only decision was to go for the SK 3 or the SK 4, to cut a long story short and get to the bones of this piece I chose the SK 4 12” 3 ¼ TC. I received them the next day, this may sound normal, however when you live in a small village in Scotland it is very unusual. After carefully unwrapping the well packed rods the first glimpse of the slim blanks made me smile, yep there they are, no fancy frills or thrills there then, remember I had the old Daiwa Infinities magnum Tapers with the gold trimmings etc! A good looking rod that felt great in the hand. I wasted no time, and strapped my Daiwa Infinity BRs to them and took them up the field for a chuck with a lead, OMG they felt great, and the lead soon pulled the line through the guides with ease, yep they can cast a large lead to the horizon, but will they handle a large fish under the tip, well I’m not going to find that out in a field, so off to JURASSICA 2 in Bucy Le Long, France we go.
