Dave Russell 18kg
It was quite amazing to see how quickly this years event at Madine was fully subscribed leaving many, many people disappointed. The 2008 event was such a success and it was not hard to see why so many carp anglers from around Europe and the Rest of the World want to be a part of one of the greatest carp matches on the planet.
Dave Russell - 18kgIn discussions with Ross it was clear that we needed to expand the WCC experience to a greater audience and therefore, although there are a number of qualifiers already taking part this year, the plan was that we needed to do more on this front. Ultimately the plan would be that everyone who fished the final would have had to got there via a qualifier making the winner of WCC final a true carp champion of the world.

I was therefore off fishing in France over Easter with a couple of mates Mick Barnard and Dave Russell whom I have fished with across Europe for many years and know the score on these European venues. The venue was in Northern France and the brief was simple – would it fit the requirements for a WCC qualifier ie beautiful location, good fishing and the potential for some great carp. The plan is for the qualifiers to be just as much fun as the final itself with great atmosphere, friendships made, a party at the beginning and great organisation.

Dave Russell 24.5kgI am pleased to say that the venue passed with flying colours, it sees very little in the way of carp anglers and although the weather was a bit patchy whilst we were there and it was an unknown quantity as to what we would catch. The fishing started slowly with some hard fighting commons and mirrors upto 8kg, the fishing really took off mid week though when Dave hooked what looked like a never before caught mirror of 18kg. Even better was to come next morning when he woke me a 5am to say he had got an absolute beast in the landing net. He wasn’t wrong as we lifted a huge framed mirror onto the unhooking mat; it was in mint condition with a huge wrist of a tail, on the scales the carp went 24.5kg and a real stunner.

That was the last of the action as the heavy rain cooled the water and the carps appetite, still it was job done. The venue had a good head of smaller carp in the 5-9kg range but then there was also the chance of something very special, I am certain that there are bigger carp in the venue and who knows what it might produce. Even though it was Easter and you would expect it to be busy, not another angler was fishing the venue. More details of this qualifier and others will be released over the course of the year, so watch this space in the exciting world of WCC. One word of advice don’t ask where the venue is – our lips are sealed!!
