Steve Howard’s WCC blog (no9)
Auf Wiedersehen, Ahoj, Ja ne, Viszlát!, Arrivederci, À bientôt, See you later!
Well, I’ve got the buzz now as I’m packing my bags and getting ready for the off later tonight. This will be the last blog from me here in the UK, and the next you hear from me will be from Madine so bring it on, I can’t wait!

It seemed a bit strange this week, as not having to take my tackle and all the other carpy paraphernalia, it has all been pretty low-key here.  Oddly enough, I actually miss that element, as the preparation for the WCC has been an ever-present factor for so many years now.  I know that all of you who are taking part will be going over everything in your minds time and again, checking, double checking and re-checking again to ensure that everything you need is in order and ready to go.
For many of you, a very long road trip lies ahead, and that always holds the potential for a problem or two, so, I hope that you all arrive safely at Madine, and in good time. For me, I have to be at Dover for around 06.30 and will be disembarking the ferry at around 08.30 local time. With a near 5-hour journey ahead of us down to Madine, if you’re already there at around 13.30 when we are due to arrive, please get the kettle on!

Sadly, the boat that I was to be bringing along with me was discovered to have a small leak I the outer skin, so it won’t now be used on Madine.  The cathedral hull of the Dell Quay Dory is a superb and much copied design, but one of the small problems that can develop is in the double skin formation.  If the hull develops a hole in the outer skin, although there is no water ingress into the boat itself, the void in-between the skins of the hull can fill with water making the boat extremely heavy.  In severe cases, if the void fills with water completely, the boat loses that extra buoyancy and due to the added problem of the added weight of the water, it is unable to rise in the water and its tri-hull is then rendered unusable.  So anyway, the short story is, that’s that I’m afraid.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to meeting up with everyone again this year, but for the time being, I wish you all a safe and pleasant journey!
Be safe, be lucky.
