Marshalls Blog
Marshal: Joe Miller Print E-mail

704-Blog1Hello my fellow carp lovers! This will be my 3rd time marshalling the World Carp Classic so returning anglers may have read a similar blog before. For those of you who haven’t, this is me!

I have been fishing mad since the age of 3 when my dad first took me fishing for roach. I was hooked instantly and for the following years had, to quote Darrel Peck,  a “misspent youth” fishing at every opportunity and hating school. Throughout school we were constantly asked what we wanted to do afterwards and my reply was always the same “Something to do with fish would be nice”. However, soon before I finished school I realised I didn’t know nearly enough about the aquaculture/fish business. Whilst working at my local fishery during my last summer at school, the owner pointed me in the direction of Sparsholt. It sounded like perfect place to acquire the skills necessary and the rest, as they say, is history!

By the time the 2012 WCC comes around, I will have graduated (Fingers crossed!) and got my BSc degree. All I can say is that it has been one hell of a journey. Loads of fish, laughs and even a few tears along the way and I am so glad I chose to do it. I am sure the knowledge and training gained over the 3 years will stand me in good stead for the future. Unfortunately, due to the work load, and numerous work placements, my own fishing has been very limited However, I have miss used the odd reading week and manage to get the rods out every now and again. My highlight from last year has to have been capturing Rosie (The lakes biggest mirror) from Coking Farm for a second time (Below) which happened on what turned out to be my only major session of the year (4 days).

Readers of my previous blog may remember that I had just started my dissertation in conjunction with CEFAS and Bournemouth University. Although at the time of writing I have not received my704-Blog2 grade, the results and my observations contributed to towards a scientific paper that is being published at the time of writing. I have been listed as a co author for the paper due to my contribution and am very proud of the final copy.

The World Carp classic can only be described as a truly special event. It is amazing to see the biggest names in the carp world together and all happy to mingle with the marshals and have a great time. My first marshalling experience came at WCC 2010 at Madine where I marshalled on the big island. We had been warned about the opportunities the WCC presents and having stayed in touch with some of the anglers in my section, I have been invited to Italy this summer to experience carp fishing Italiano! In return, my Italian friends will travel over here and experience the joys of English carp fishing which is something I am really looking forward to.

I believe WCC 2012 has the potential to be the best yet. The fishing had become predictable at Madine and I feel the decision to move is just at the right time. Bolsena also seems like the ideal place to hold such a prestigious event, having no obvious areas that the fish can shoal into.

Hopefully this is all true and I will see you at Bolsena with big smiles on your faces. See you there!

Marshal: Lee Hellawell Print E-mail

703-blog1My name is Lee Hellawell, I am 26 and in my fist year at Sparsholt College in Hampshire studying for a degree in Sport fisheries and Aquaculture. I am engaged to my partner Donna and have two girls - Demi and Lauren.

I am a keen angler and have been fishing since the age of 13. I have travelled to various places internationally over the last ten years and have been lucky to sample some excellent breem fishing in Ireland and some amazing carp fishing in Canada - of which numerous fish to over 30lb were caught.

For the last 5 years I have been heavily involved in Commercial style match carp fishing. I currently fish for 2 local angling clubs in my home town of Leeds, West Yorkshire and have managed to win the seasonal league competition for the last 2 years running. I also fish lots of open matches in the north of England on various venues such as Woodlands Lakes and Lindholme lakes.

However, other commitments will prevent me from doing so this year - studying mostly!!. I must admit I havent been fishing in a lot of matches of late through lack of time but have been 'grabbing' instead some pleasure fishing session whenever I can. At least this way I am still managing to wet a line. ( the fishing is soooo much easier in the south Ha Ha...)

703-blog2Before Sparsholt I was in the construction industry, working as a site foreman. I had been in this position for about three years when I realised that I wasn't happy and it certainly wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - so I started to look at other options. That's when I came accross Sparsholt. It seemed like the perfect choice as I could take something I have a great passion for and combine it with a potential career.

Although only in my first year and I am loving it. It is by far the best career decission I have made so far. I am learning so much about the fishing environment, fish habitat, water quality etc etc... After graduation, I hope to secure a job as a fish health and environmental inspector, maybe for CEFAS or the Environment Agency. My ultimate goal would to be to offer my services freelance as a Fisheries Consultant nationally - specialising in fish welfare and aquaculture design/management. But all that seems a bit far away at the minute and I have enough to be concentrating on for the fore-seable future.

I have known about the World Carp Classic for a few years now and have allways enjoyed reading/watching the reviews about it. As said, I am a competition angler myself - so I know the amount of effort and determination needed by both the competitors and the organisers alike. The competitions I fish are small-scale compared to the WCC and I have the greatest admiration for the organising staff, ensuring that the competition is a success. As you can imagine, I was greatly appreciative when offered a place as part of the marshalling team in this year's event. I 'jumped' at the chance. I believe I will take a great deal away from this competition and am really looking foreward to the interaction with the competitors and marshalling team alike - it should be a great event.

See you all there - Lee

Marshal: Jonathan Clifford Print E-mail

698-blog1My name is Jonathan Clifford and I am from Louth, Lincolnshire. I can’t begin to tell you how lucky I feel to be given this opportunity to be a part of the largest carp fishing organization in the world.

I started my life in a little village near Louth called Yarbrough. Life as a country bunkin was amazing and I loved being surrounded by trees, water and wildlife. While at school my brother and I would go fishing every weekend with my dad and friends.

We all learnt the basics, fishing the drains and old farm ponds locally. We would even go sticklebacking it didn’t matter as long as we where fishing. Every weekend would be different, we would go to; lakes, ponds, rivers, canals, drains even estuaries.698-blog2

I never did that well at school and just felt too distracted, always staring out the window day dreaming about being by the bank somewhere, anywhere but cooped up in a class room. I have been fishing for 25 years and hope to carry on for as long as I am able.

698-blog3I dropped out of college where I was learning to be a carpenter. It just wasn’t for me. I moved from job to job never settling anywhere for long. I travelled to Scotland working on pipelines as a welder’s mate and learned valuable lessons in team work. I’ve also worked all over the country doing construction work like ground works, labouring, demolition, concreting and brick cleaning all of which have needed team work and a lot of hard work. The wide ranges of jobs have all been great but i just couldn’t accept that, that was my life. I really wanted to do something that would contribute to what had given me so much pleasure through my life.

I enrolled at Riseholme College in Lincoln doing sustainable management of natural environments as it was the only course that had a unit on water quality. This course would help me understand the importance of Bio diversity and sustainability. The two years went fast, and living on campus meant I could fish the college's lake every spare minute. I managed to tempt fish up to 27.10 which was the biggest fish in there. I was nicknamed granddad as I was almost twice the age of my classmates!!!.

I never dreamed in all my life that I would go to university. I ended up with a triple distinction which gave me698-blog4 the chance, so I took it. I had never heard of Sparsholt until my interview with a lovely lady at Riseholme where I was trying to get onto a conservation and biology degree.

She refused my application because my personal statement was all about lake restoration, fisheries and the like. She brought up Sparsholt on the computer and asked whether this would suit me more. My jaw hit the ground after reading about the Sports fisheries and Aquaculture degree. It really would be a dream come true to get on the course.

Nearly one year on I am having the best time of my life learning more than I ever thought possible. The opportunities that are available are second to none. I went to Linear Fisheries for 4 weeks on work experience and was lucky enough to fish every night while on my placement. I had the best time there even if it was in January!

698-blog5While there I, fished St John’s and had my first 30 at 31.10 and 6 others up to just over 20 I really was on top of the world. I am doing my open water diving course this year and working in France through the summer. So when the opportunity came up to be a marshal at the WCC, I had to everything in my power to secure a place.

Luckily there were just enough places for everyone at Sparsholt so no bribe needed. I feel privileged to be representing Sparsholt at such an event and can’t wait to go.

Looking forward to meeting you there.

Jonathan

Marshal: Randy Muts Print E-mail

Hello my name is Randy Muts, 20 years old and I come from the Netherlands.
I'm the first marshall coming from a Dutch fisheries school to assist Sparsholt and Shuttleworth marshelling teams.

697-blog1L
ike most anglers I started young and it has now shape my life. For the past two years I have been involved with the WCC as a team runner for  Rob Nunn and Dean Macey in the first year and Rob Nunn & Stewart Downing in the second697-blog2 year. Both pairs were representing JRC in the event for which I happen to be a consultant as well.

Thanks to JRC I had my first encounter with the WCC and all it's glory.

I can't wait to be a marshal this year and see the event from another perspective. I was a marshalls earlier this year at WCC Dutch qualifiers which already was fantastic but can't wait to go a step bigger!

The reason I got involved with the Dutch qualifier came from an internship at Carp Connections who are the Dutch agents as well as the managers of Carp Connections Pure Fishing Resort du Der. During my stay I caught the resort record with a 23.5 kg which is still standing.

697-blog3

90% of my angling time is spent carp fishing at both small and large sandpits - some are full of weeds!!. I also enjoy flyfising and float fishing with a match pole.

This year I started well with a nice common of 13.1 kg on January 6th.. Currently don't get a change to fish much are trade shows and school work takes all my time but can't complain as I guess that’s the struggle all anglers encounter - for sure we would rather spend our time on the banks.

Where do I see myself in the near future?

I really would like to work for a big company like Pure Fishing. I will be completing an internship from this 697-blog september and hope to make an impression to secure a position once I have graduated next year.

Competition for such position is fierce but will give all I have in order to persue my dreams.

I look forward to May when I will join the Team at the Ebro for the World Catfish Classic and again September in Italy for the World Carp Classic and see some old and new faces alike.

Tight lines,

Randy
