| Red Nose Day & Richard Walker |

As it was the last day but one of the fishing season i took the students fishing on the local River Ivel, conditions were perfect and expectations were high as some good fish were getting caught. As Sainbury's is next to the river, Cliff a WCC marshall from last year decided to pop along and pick his nose!! much to the amusement of the shoppers. It matches his WCC hoodie perfectly although it has to be said Cliff hasnt taken his hoodie off since the WCC ended and its beginning to fade a little as he wears it everywhere he goes. I mentioned Richard Walker in the title and we were indeed fishing the stretch he once angled , his widow still lives there and it was inspiring to look at his garden by the little river and imagine him fishing for those big barbel and chub all those years ago.Through his capture of the then record carp from Redmire and his promotion of carp fishing in the 1950s, we are now lucky to have a sport that is spread across the world. Where might we be now had the great man never fished for carp and had such a major impact on angling - awesome. |
