How good are your hooks? – since the weather is so bad outside and theres not much to write about on the fishing front I thought I would look at some of the tackle that I use. One of the most important and probably over looked, is hooks, how many people will carry on using a hook when it has lost its sharpness and then moan when they get a take and the carp falls off – too many.
How easy is it to either change the hook, okay you need to change your carefully prepared rig but make a job lot up in advance whilst you are laying in your bivvy doing nothing! You are then prepared anytime of the day or night to change the rig over and improve you chances of catching more carp. What if the hook is only slightly blunt, no problem, use a sharpening stone just to get it back to peak performance – how many carpers carry a sharpening stone in the tackle box – again not many I would guess. We are spoilt for choice nowadays with all types of hook and patterns and it is a personal choice which really comes down to confidence. Two of my favourites at the moment are the Nash Fang X and the Korda Kurvs both really top good quality and what I like about them is they stay sharper longer than a lot of hooks I have used. I also have lost a lot fewer carp since using them and have total confidence in both them and never leave home without them. You want to catch more carp think about your hooks.
