Having left Paraloup early this left me with a decision to make as to where to fish next as as predicted the long spell of rain had made the Lot difficult to fish, so I decided to go back to Monkey lake.
Although it had been less than a week since I had left, the lake was getting busier, although I was latter to find out that this was because it was an extended French holiday. My favourite area was still free but I wanted to try another area I fancied about 400 metres away, in a quiet corner of the lake, which given the numbers of anglers now fishing seemed like a good bet.
Next came the interesting part, now given I wasn’t fishing that far from my original spot, fishing similar a similar type lake bed and depth then I was still expecting large numbers of crayfish. I therefore began with the same set up that I had finished with ie 25mm Monster Pursuit/ Mutant snowman rig. This isn’t the most subtle of rigs but atleast you get a chance against the crayfish, as before I spread about 5kg of Monster Pursuit boilies and halibut pellets along the margins. I saw a couple of carp crash over the 10m spot first evening and so was feeling confident, but the first night produced no action. Given the crayfish problem I was keen to see how prolific they were down this end of the lake and so checked the rods next morning. I was very surprised to see that none of the baits had any indication of crayfish activity, this was strange. Given the evidence I changed two of the baited rods to 20mm baits and a normal airball pop ups much more refined. This produced action straight away with a string of 30’s but only in shallow water, no more than 2 metres, I kept one rod in the deeper 10 metre water just in case a biggie came along. There is a good lesson here in that no matter how well you think you now a lake it will always throw up a surprise and you need to react to this, try something different and the results may surprise you.
After 10 days I was ready for a change and decided I had left the Lot alone for long enough, time to get on there….
