Conquering the Madine challenge Print E-mail

Andries Maree
2010 is a very big year for South Africa in many ways. The hosting of the Soccer World Cup, defending the World Carp Championship Title in England, hosting the Ladies World Match Angling Championships, sending a complete Carp Team to the World Carp Classic (WCC), to name but a few. For the past few years South Africa was taking part in the event in the form of single pairs.

During 2009 the pair that took part had the best result yet for South Africa. That was the ignition of the South African challenge. On the return of the pair from France the news spread and the anglers became interested to attend the WCC. After taking note of the increasing interest between the anglers, the top Specimen Carp Anglers came together and had a discussion about the attendance.

A team was then compiled by including 2 pairs from the current South African Carp Angling Team and a pair consisting out of two very experienced Specimen Carp Anglers. At this stage the objective of the team is to be competitive......and may be....who knows? In the team there are only 4 anglers who have fished at Madine previously. The experience in French carp angling within the team is thus not much, but the competitive nature between the members is there.
Some of the team members came together for the first planning session during June. The remainder of the members were either involved with the Soccer World Cup activities or fishing for carp. This session focused mainly on the logistical planning for the WCC.

TTeam South Africao travel from another continent to take part in this event requires excellent planning. Our sport is not soccer where a pair of soccer boots and soccer balls and the games can begin...we need tackle and equipment. I suppose you as fellow carp anglers know that very well. Allow me to give you a small look into the implications....

We prefer to use our own tackle and equipment which means it needs to travel. We feel about our tackle the same as about our wives......We don’t borrow tackle from somebody and we don’t lend our tackle to somebody.....If you want to ruin a fishing friendship, ask to borrow tackle. The quickest method to get it in France is to put it into a container and book it on a flight.....one challenge is that for every boilie, chair, rod, etc which leaves South Africa, it must be placed on the traveling documents. It’s the same as exporting items.

After this session we now know when we will be going to apply for our visas at the French Embassy, when we will be flying, how many vehicles we need to rent, etc. So the focus for this meeting was mainly to make sure that the team will be at the right lake, on time, with the right equipment to take part in the WCC.

We had a brief discussion about the angling strategy and what to expect.....but that is the focus of our next gathering.
